This section of the
site will concentrate on gaols, workhouses and hospitals, hence the title.
Many genealogists have ancestors that found there way into the first two
institutions and I thought it might be of interest to identify those buildings
that remain. In reality, the state run, or eventually NHS (National Health
Service) hospitals, grew out of the old workhouse system of caring for
people who unwanted, were unable to look after themselves and/or had other
problems or ailments resulting in them being unable to support themselves.
This is why hospitals are included in this area.
