One of the few buildings left standing on the North side of Upper Bridge Steet was the Co-op although this was soon demolished, like so many other buildings in the area which were unsafe. Originally, I had mistaken this building for the Regal Cinema which is just across the road in St. Georges Place and of a similar size and appearance. (My thanks to Edmund Wood for pointing this out). Despite the fact that its exterior walls were left standing, it received a direct hit when a bomb went through the roof and destroyed the interior. As it happened, the film "Gone With the Wind" was playing at the time and the following morning, pieces of the actual film could be found blowing around the littered streets of the City. Next to the Regal there used to be a ballroom which ran popular afternoon "tea dances" which was also flattened. Beyond the Regal a row of houses were destroyed as far up as the Baptist Church. These houses included the home of Dr. and Mrs. Lucas. After the war the area was replaced by Caffyns Garage. |
