| The day that I was invited onto the roof of the tower at St. Laurence it was very misty as you will see from the pictures below. Therefore, the location of the Towns of Deal and Sandwich are approximate, but hopefully, not too far out. I hope to be invited back to the Church again and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a clear, warm day in the Summer! I'm sorry the pictures are not better but it might give some of my overseas visitors who are normally limited to just a map, at least a little idea about the area. If you click and hold your left mouse button on the picture you can move it around manually. To zoom in and out, use the buttons in the bottom left-hand corner. |

Manston - the WWII airfield. It is the longest runway in England and in WWI it was used by many squadrons but was also a crash runway for bombers returning to England in difficulties. Many Liberators crashed here during WWII and the USAF had teams stationed at "The Loop" so that any of their planes that could be repaired were put back in the air as soon as possible. Once repaired they could rejoin their squadrons that were mainly based in Norfolk. Underneath the letter "e" in the picture is a Boeing 747 standing at the edge of the runway. The airfield is now being called "London - Manston" and will possibly become another overflow airport for London in the years to come. |
