St. Mary's Church,
Stelling.

It almost seems that this strange little church is in the middle of nowhere. It is reached by side roads from the former Roman Stone Street Road that runs from Canterbury to Hythe. It has a very low square tower that gives it the appearance that it is hugging the ground and afraid of the West winds to which it is particularly exposed. There are some huge ancient tew trees in the North West corner of the churchyard and a row of small cottages to the South. It is one of these churches that is in the middle of the countryside and one is left wondering why it is so placed. It is quite a large parish and one area, known as Stelling Minnis, formerly an open area of common grazing land, lies some distance to the East towards the back of the Elham Valley.
Up until quite recently, this parish retained its Victorian marriage records which was a source of frustration to me as there were entries that I needed to review. I believe they have now been handed in to the Archives at Canterbury Cathedral for filming but it was something that I must check on again in the near future.
