Smeeth is a pleasant quiet little corner off the A20 Ashford to Folkestone Road. After making the turning off this busy highway, the Church of St. Mary pops up in front of you on the first tree-lined bend in the side-road.A typical little Kent country church built as is often the case with the local flint, there is also a pretty porchway made of clapboard and painted white. Unfortunately, like so many other country churches these days, the Church was locked when I was there which means that I will have to try and see the inside on another day I am in the area. The area is quiet with small country houses surrounding the chuchyard. I have read another account of this Church which refers to the length of the grass around the gravestones. It would seem that the Parish has still not come to terms with the problem as it was exactly the same when I visited.
Apparently, the somewhat squat tower on this Church is not original but was completed during a restoration in 1881.
