IVYCHURCH -
St. George's Church

There are numerous churches on the Romney Marsh and quite why this is so is to some extent, open to speculation. However, in the past when many of these communities might have been separated by water because of outlets, inlets and flooding, it may well have made sense for the various villages to have their own place of worship than to try to reach other churches that might well, at times, have been inaccessible.

These ideas of my own do not not explain why a tiny place like Ivychurch would have such "a barn" of a church. The Church is massive and consists of three aisles of what seems to be rather excessive length, being 113 feet from nose to tail. Having said this, it is a lovely Church with a charm and character all of its own. When I visited there, sheep had been let loose in the Churchyard to graze the grass around the gravestones and what better setting for a Romney Marsh church.
