(formerly The Queen's Head)

Although it is difficult to complain about a pub taking on its original title rather than using some other wierd and wonderful name, it does seem rather a shame that this particular Queen has disappeared from the City Streets. The "Queen's Head" painted on the Whitbread sign was supposed to represent Queen Bertha, the orginal Christian Queen of Kent and wife of King Ethelbert who was converted to Christianity through the efforts of his Queen and St. Augustine. The matching pub to the Queen's Head, "The King's Head" depicting King Ethelbert, is alive and well at Reculver and has recently re-opened after renovations.
This pub has reverted to its original name, The Three Tuns, after being known as The Queen's Head since the 18th Century which is why the sign to the right does not match the current name. There has been a pub on this site since about 1600.
