The Mitre, The Friars, Canterbury
© P.E. Blanche 1999
As the Marlowe Theatre was moved to the old Odeon Cinema across the road, this pub now services the theatre visitors as well as its regular patrons.
The Mitre is still licenced premises but since 1981 has traded under the rather unimaginative name of The Canterbury Tales. At one time, strangely enough, there were very few pubs in Canterbury that had any association in their names with the nearby Cathedral but obviously the Mitre was one of them. The pub used this name from the mid-1800's although there had been a Mitre in Canterbury anything up to 200 years before that.
