The Old City

The cream coloured building with the shutters to the left of the picture is what is now known as "The Old City Bar", previously the "Old City" public house, so not a lot has changed other than the fact that the "Whitbread sign" has gone. To the left stands one of the few oast house buildings that still remain in the built up area surrounding Canterbury. A reminder of the days when Canterbury had so many breweries.

The pub stands in Oaten Hill which, as the name suggests, was once the location for the cereal market for Canterbury. Subsequent to being a market, the City gallows were placed here. Underneath the car park in front of The Old City is an ancient burial mound - obviously flattened to accomodate its current use.
