The Falstaff Tap, North Lane, Canterbury
© P.E. Blanche 1998
The opposite side of the road used to be occupied by many of the old weavers cottages but most of them were destroyed by a bomb in the Second World War.
Standing in the shadow of the Westgate Towers, the Falstaff Tap was still operating up until about a year ago but its place as a local hostelry to this area has been taken over by a very "plastic", glass-fronted monster right next-door to this old building. North Lane was a poorer area of Canterbury and the interior of the pub, to me, always seemed to reflect this, being somewhat of a "spit and sawdust" type of arrangement.
The detail from an old postcard showing the rear of the cottages opposite the Westgate Towers as they used to be.
