The Eight Bells, London Road, Canterbury
© P.E. Blanche 1999
Originally owned by the Sankey family, it was transferred to the Hythe Brewers, Mackeson & Co. and then to Whitbread who still operate it as one of their "pubmaster" chain. It is rather nice to see that they still retain the older pub signed that has adorned this road for many years.
There seems to have been, at one time, an "Eight Bells" pub in St. Dunstan's Street, just around the corner from here. However, it seems that there might also have been a pub in this general location before it became the "new" Eight Bells and it may perhaps have been a coaching inn. Apparently, the present pub operated a small coach and stable service at the rear of the present premises at the turn of the century.
