The
Black Horse, Orchard Street, Canterbury
© P.E. Blanche 2002
It was originally part
of the George Rigden & Co. chain of public houses and incorporated in
a dividing wall at the rear of the property is a stone inserted by these local
Canterbury Brewers with the date of 1909 impressed into it. Not very long
until their Centenary year!
This is a delightful
family run public house which is still maintains the true tradition of the British
"local". It serves a charming older area of Victorian and Edwardian
houses in the St. Dunstan's area of Canterbury not too far to the North of the
Westgate Towers. It is also close to Church Street which runs up to the rear
of the local church of St. Dunstan's which has a close association with Sir
Thomas More.
