Petham.
Located: about five miles South of Canterbury, just to the West of the B2068 Stone Street Road to Hythe.
This is a small village with very little of particular note other than it's connection with the Ancient Britons and of its Church with Canterbury Cathedral. After the forces of the Ancient Britons had been defeated by the Romans up on Barham Downs they were known to have fled and regrouped in this area. There are a large number of Tumuli to the West of Petham.
All Saints Church, Petham.
Click on this picture for a larger version. The Church of All Saints has a somewhat obscure connection with Canterbury Cathedral and perhaps one that it now wishes it didn't have. It seems that late in the 1700's, the Church and the Parish fell on particularly hard times and had to sell the majority of the stained glass. Some of it was bought by Canterbury Cathedral to replace glass which had been destroyed during the Commonwealth period. Therefore, the Petham glass now adorns part of the Corona and an East Window of the Crypt.
Petham was the birthplace of the Victorian novelist, Bessie Marchant. The village must win the prize for having the ugliest pub sign. "The Duke" in the centre of the village, probably originally named for the Duke of Wellington, now has a picture of a certain jazz Duke on one side and John Wayne on the other!
