The Hatchments of the Hammond Family © P.E. Blanche 2001 |
This is the detail from one of the Hammond hatchments shown above. A Hatchment was completed at the time of death of a member of a wealthy family who obviously had a coat of arms to go along with the wealth. Those of us who number "Ag. Labs." among our ancestors haven't got a hope of ever seeing one of these in out family tree! When the particular person was removed from the family estate to the parish church that contained the family vault or plot, then the hatchment came with them and was hung in the church. Basically, the hatchment stayed with the mortal remains. Note the "death's head" at the foot of the painting. Below the hatchments in Nonington Church there is a whole wall of tablets to the various members of the Hammond family. It just shows the amount of information that can be gleaned in certain churches about family ancestors. This is the War Memorial which is carved into the buttress at the Southwest corner of the Church.
