Margate.
Location: On the North coastline of the Isle of Thanet.
It was in the mid-eighteenth century that Margate became a popular seaside and holiday resort especially for the inhabitants of London. Apparently the bathing machine was not seen here first but it was introduced into this area by a local Quaker, Benjamin Beale. Donkey rides and resort beaches in England once went hand in hand. It is said that at one time in Margate the animals were used for carrying humans by day and contraband by night. Poor donkeys obviously had very little rest!
Margate Harbour
Click on this image for the full pictureOpposite the centre of the seafront lies the fair grounds known as "Dreamland". At one time a real attraction to the visitors to the town but now somewhat out of date. The history of the site goes back some way because at one time this particular area was used by the Sanger circus family as their Winter quarters. Apparently, the patriarch of this family, George Sanger was buried in the local cemetery and his grave is adorned by a huge circus horse. Other members of the family are also buried here.
