The Duke of Kent
- July 17, 1998
© P.Blanche 1998This year the Kent County Show took place on July 16th - 18th and as usual, Friday, July 17th was "Royal Day" and the H.R.H. The Duke of Kent, who is the Patron of the Kent County Agricultural Society, visited the grounds taking in several of the events on his tour. At the Kent County Council exhibit the Duke was able to see students from the area making use of the Internet on several computers that had been set up for the purpose. The downside was that they weren't using this site while he was there!
The Duke also presented long service awards to agricultural workers and other prizes in the main show-ring.
Overall the weather was fairly kind, although the low cloud that tends to be a part of most Detling shows was present from time to time, more than 100,000 people visited the three-day event this year. With the current economic problems in the farming industry, it is difficult to tell how long this show will be able to able to continue in its present format and receive the on-going support that it does from local businesses.
