Ickham.
Location: Five miles East of Canterbury, just North of the A257, Canterbury to Sandwich road.
Ickham is a quiet, pleasant and typical small East Kent village with its single main street. The Church of St. John the Evangelist stands back slightly from the East side of this road. At the moment, I can find no particular history associated directly with the village other than the little local rhyme that it shares with it's Nothern neighbour, Wickhambreaux, which I have already quoted on that page. However, in case you don't need to look there, I'll repeat it here:
Ickham, pickham,
Penny Wickham,
Cockaloram jay,
Eggs, butter, cheese, bread,
Hick, stick, stone dead!In a quest to find out something of note about Ickham, I found an article detailing the obtaining of a World Record by John Bennett in 1977 in the village pub, The Duke William. The feat cannot be found in the Guinness Book of Records because they will not condone further attempts because of the dangers involved. John kept two live ferrets down his trousers for four hours and twelve minutes beating the previous record by a full twelve minutes. John took no break or relief during this time and was allowed no under garments or protection beneath his trousers which also had to be tied about six inches above the knees and around the waist. The services of a local doctor who had to be on hand were luckily not required.
