These are the bones that were recovered from an ancient graveyard and are there for all to see. The block in the centre that looks like a wood-pile is actually hundreds of arm and leg bones. The number of femurs suggest that there might be as many as 2,000 bodies. Some of the skulls show deformities such as large lumps possibly caused by tumours. It certainly seems to be an economic method of burial and perhaps I might request that they stick my bones on the end of the shelf when I go! When I was last there, a Robin was trying to build a nest inside one of the skulls - sort of natural recycling without a "blue box". Addition (9/98): I have just received a message from Ruth Golding of Hythe to tell me that the robin was allowed to raise its family in peace. Just the way a Church should be! Just to finish off the story, I have now included a picture (bottom left) of the empty nest which is still there for all to see.
