The view from the Southeast
© PE Blanche 2002 The Font in the South Aisle
© PE Blanche 2002This is a Church which has a special fascination for no particular reason - but more about that later on page two. Unusually, this Church has it's entrance and porch on the North side of the building which is said to be the side of a church where the devil lurks. Hence, the majority of churches have their entrance on the South side but obviously, logistics have to come into play at times and so it is at Hollingbourne.
Unfortunately, during my recent visits to the Church, there have been no guides books available for sale. If anyone from this village happens to read this page and can tell me where I can get hold of a copy, I'd be most grateful.
It is said that the majority of this Church is of 13th Century construction although there is no doubt that there has been a Church on this site for a long time before that as painted foundations were found when repair work was being carried out about thirty years ago. It is also possible that repairs resulting from an earthquake in the late 13th Century (see also second page) accounts for so much 13th Century work being visible. There have been later additions to the structure such as the Culpeper Chapel and there has also been the usual Victorian "improvements".
I do not have a date for the font (pictured bottom left) although the cover which is 15th Century and still with its original mechanism for lifting it, must be contemporary or slightly before. The pulpit shows similar craftsmanship and it is possible that both items were made by the same person.
