THE "OLD"
LIGHTHOUSE,
DUNGENESS

The picture above shows the "Old" Lighthouse, built in 1901, and the old Coastguard Cottages in the background. In fact, having been built in 1901 it's not really that old as far as "things Kentish" go but there have been beacons or lighthouses in this area centuries. The first permanent structure was built in the reign of James I and what is now termed the "Old" Lighthouse is actually the fourth such structure. Even though it was built slightly less than a century ago, it already stands quite a distance inland as the shingle builds up on the beaches. It is now privately owned and is opened to visitors for a reasonable fee. Although it is open every day during the Summer months, I would suggest consulting local tourist information at other times of the year as it does shut during the week in the Spring and Autumn and I believe closes completely over the Winter.
Ticket to the Lighthouse
Grab a ticket and climb the one hundred and sixty odd steps to the top of the lighthouse for some breath-taking (and they are after the climb!) views of the Romney Marsh.
Looking down on the Lighthouse
The New Lighthouse Power Station Romney Marsh
You now have a bird's eye view of the top of the Old Lighthouse. Place your mouse over any one of the three beams of light coming from the lamp and you will be shown the view from that point.
