At the Church of SS. Peter and Paul,
the local people of Dymchurch
in period costume wait to begin
the Days of Syn enactment.

Inside the ancient Church at
Dymchurch is a small brass plaque
on the South wall which reads:

In grateful memory of
ARTHUR RUSSELL THORNDIKE
6th February 1885 to 7th November 1972
Actor and Author who lived in this village
Creator of the fictional Vicar of Dymchurch,
Dr. Syn
The Day of Syn theme was given by
the Thorndike Family
to the Rector and PCC of
SS Peter and Paul Church Dymchurch
for fund raising

Russell Thorndike was a true "Man of Kent" having been born in Rochester in 1885. In later years he spent a lot of time in Dymchurch and created the character of Dr. Syn drawing from many stories told to him by the local community.
