"DAYS
OF SYN" DYMCHURCH AUGUST 31,1998
|
The books by Russell Thorndike about the Vicar of Dymchurch, known as Doctor Syn, have created a legend in this part of Kent although the reality is that no such person ever existed here. However, there is no question that there were many smugglers in this part of Kent over the years and it was the stories about these individuals upon which Russell Thorndike based his series of books. |

To
some extent the local inhabitants have taken the Doctor Syn legend one
step further using information from the original stories and the subsequent
Walt Disney movie of "The Scarecrow". On August 31st, the Town
becomes alive with the characters from the pages of the books dressed
in authentic looking costumes of the early 1800's.

To
attempt to bring law and order to The Marshes and the Town of Dymchurch,
the military marches in with pipes playing! This year the Town received
the help of The 42nd Highland Regiment re-enactment goup together with
the Folkestone Volunteer Artillery.
