ST. MARY MAGDALENE CHURCH
DENTON

This Church is set well back from the main Canterbury to Folkestone Road and although sign-posted is not easy to find. It is off a laneway at the South end of the Village next to the Manor House of Denton Court which in recent times is closely associated with the Gosling family. Other "Lords of the Manor" include:
- John Boys, Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster, who died in 1543. His son rebuilt the Manor House but eventually sold it.
- Wortly Whorwood of Gray's Inn who died in 1703.
- Samuel Egerton Brydges, Barrister at Law and the second son of Edward Brydges of Wootton who acquired Denton Court in 1792.
- The Willats family. There are two tablets and a stained glass window in the church to their memory.
The Church with it's castellations on the West Tower is generally of 13th Century in origin. In many respects has nothing of particular note to commend it or set it apart from other churches in the area. However, inside it is attractively plain and being a small Church, seems somewhat cosy, other than for the fact that because of the trees around it, it can tend to be rather cool. Having visited the Church on a weekday, I cannot be sure as to whether there is an adequate heating system that can be brought into use for the parishioners when the need arises!
As it happens, this is a clear example of what I mean by a location being "difficult to photograph" on my Village Shots page. God's green acre in this particular spot is totally surrounded by beautiful huge beech and copper beech trees which also actually overhang the Church in places. Inside the churchyard are many mature yew trees and the above view of the Church is just about the only one available. However, I hope that you'll agree that this picture captures the tranquility of this pretty and seldom visited country Church.
