The
ARCHITECTURE
of
CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

For some time I have been receiving requests by E-mail to provide information, particularly for homework assignments, about the construction and styles of building of Canterbury Cathedral. I cannot answer all these questions individually and I don't do homework anymore so this area will be an attempt to provide information about the Cathedral and the building through the ages and the people that were directly involved. This, like other projects on the site, will take time to complete but it is always difficult to bring together sufficient meaningful detail together with pictures that hopefully bring the pages to life. Initially, I will try to give some basic information on the following categories:

The Early Cathedral - Before the Normans

Lanfranc's Cathedral

The 12th Century and the rebuilding of the Choir

The 13th and 14th Century additions

The 15th and 16th Century including the removal of the tomb of St. Thomas

The 17th Century to date - including the good, the bad and the ugly of recent additions
