Canterbury
Cathedral
from St. Thomas' Hill

This is a slightly unusual view of the Cathedral for most visitors to Canterbury as it would only be seen if the City is approached from the main Whitstable Road or from Tyler Hill. In fact this picture is taken from somewhere between the two, below where the "new" University of Kent now stands, looking out across the Valley of the River Stour.

The Chapter House Any view of the Cathedral is magnificent but to my mind, this is one of the best. However, I may be somewhat prejudiced as this is the sight that I lived with for all my early years, having grown up close to the spot where this picture was taken. The huge West window can be seen clearly from this angle although obviously it's real splendor can only be seen from inside the building. To the North of the Cathedral, near the main Bell Harry tower, is a large square looking roof which is the Chapter House. This was originally built as a meeting place for the Prior and included stalls for the monks around the inner wall. The huge wooden ceiling or roof of this building is a fine example of wagon-vaulting dating from the early 15th Century.
